WE WON! WE WON! WE WON! THE WOMBLES HAVE WON THE SALVER after defeating Brisbane & District 6/1. Go Wombles!!!!!

MEG NUNN SALVER 2011 The team for this year is: Hollie Sinclair Beerwah; Nikita Thomas Bargara; Jacinta Fricot Peregian Springs; Debbie Macaulay Horton Park; Annabel Harris Horton Park; Susan Lowrie Caloundra & Dorothy Retschlag non playing Captain. Our team is doing well and will be a contender for the Salver this year. We had a great start with a win against FNQ 5/2 & then we had a bye on Monday afternoon. This was a relaxing afternoon with thoughts of doing exceptionally well on Tuesday morning. Well this worked out to perfection and we thrashed CQ 6 1/2  to a !/2. However Tuesday afternoon NQ stopped us in our tracks. They defeated us 5/2 but 2 matches were decided on the 18th. We lost both. Today (Wednesday) was extremely great. We defeated Gold Coast 6 1/2 to 1/2 and then defeated Downs South West 5/2. We now lead the competition but have to play Brisbane tomorrow and they are only 1 point behind us. It will be a very tense morning for both teams I am sure. GO WOMBLES GO!!!!! Scores will be updated as soon as they become available. The results so far are: ( Monday AM )  ( Monday PM ) ( Tuesday AM ) ( Tuesday PM ) ( Wednesday AM ) (Wednesday PM ) ( Thursday AM ) ( Final Result )

2011 NEXT Property Group Sunshine Coast Open Ladies Amateur Championship - March 11,12 & 13
Headland/Horton Park member Lauren Mason snatched a thrilling 1 shot victory in the 2011 Next Property Group Sunshine Coast Ladies Open Amateur Championship held at Headland Golf Club in March.  Now in its 33rd year, the Open event was increased to a 54 hole championship this year, and accorded Australian ranking status.  Birdies flew freely in the practice rounds on Thursday, but some tough pins on the opening round on Friday contained free scoring, and the picturesque hilly course overlooking the Sunshine Coast lived up to its  challenging reputation.  It was Queensland State Senior Team member Corinne Swan who posted the leading score of par 73.  Despite all the rain in Queensland in previous weeks, the course was in great condition, and in Round 2 talented Qld State juniors Lauren Mason and Gennai Goodwin of Mossman both equalled the course record with scores of 71.  But it was local knowledge that helped Lauren prevail in the closing holes on Sunday. After squandering a five shot lead at the turn, Lauren held her nerve to defeat overnight co-leader Corinne Swan of Burleigh GC   2010 Champion Jessica Park from Brisbane GC finished third a further 3 shots behind Swan.  (Photo attached of Lauren Mason with Jodie McDonell of NEXT Property Group)

Thanks to our sponsors NEXT, Headland was able to invite leading NSW amateur Allyce Watkinson from The Lakes and Victorian Elissa Orr from Commonwealth, and they did much to promote amateur golf over the weekend, including some entertaining interviews prior to presentation.  Like many events, our numbers were down this year but great feedback has been received from those who participated.  The Sunny Coast Open has always worked on the tradition of only one prize per person, and with a total prize pool of $6000, many people went home happy!  Given that it is the only Australian Ranking event held in our District, we were hoping for better participation from our District, and if anyone has suggestions  for 2012, we welcome them. Although the Championship field is hot, the Classic weekend tournament had four divisions, all conducted in championship manner for draws.  We missed our girls from the bush, and from the flooded areas of our state - and with support from our great sponsors we hope that 2012 numbers will improve.

In the 36 Hole Classic events, Pine Rivers member Renee Saunders cruised to a 5 shot victory over Jodie Rockliff from Murwillumbah GC in Division 2.  Another Pine Rivers member in Jade Kendall took out Division 3 from Headland local Anne Callanan, whilst there was a win for the home club in Division 4 with Sandy Whittle taking the title by 3 shots from North Lakes' Vicki Grant.

Division 3 Runner-up Anne Callanan has a fabulous story to tell.  A reluctant participant in the entertaining  Happy Hour  "Next Property Shootout" on the par 3 18th on Friday evening, she wandered down for her chance at glory in her sandals, used a borrowed "A" wedge and floated in a ball just over the gulley and over the wall, with one bounce for a Hole in One.  The crowds on the verandah erupted!   (Photo attached of Anne wearing her prize - new Adidas sunglasses.)

We congratulate our team on their fine performance.  Our team came from the following Clubs:  Peregian Springs, Pacific Harbour, Caloundra, Kilcoy and Woodford.

Thank you to the parents from both Districts who caddied and/or gave support to their children by giving up their Sunday to watch their daughters play.  This event gives the girls valuable match play experience and an opportunity to play as a team with other junior girls.

Meg Nunn 2010 is over for another year with great results. Although we didn't bring home the salver the ladies in the team represented the District with pride and great golf to come in a creditable second. Laura McCahon (Caboolture), Tania Dowdle (Murgon), Lisa Hetherington (Caboolture), Donna Mulder (Tewantin Noosa), Sue Jones (Headland) and Annabel Harris (Horton Park) all played exceptionally well. Brisbane were the only team that defeated us and they were the eventual winners. Congratulations Brisbane & District. Our caddies were very special and assisted the players in every possible way. Thank you ladies for your very valuable experience. ( results )

Horton Park Golf Club held their annual Mother/Daughter 4Ball Challenge on Sunday 14th November

A wonderful day was had by all especially the winners Pam and Nicola Baynes, members of Horton Park . Nicola has only recently started playing and she and her mother were thrilled to win on their first attempt.

The tournament was sponsored by L'Oreal who have kindly supported the event for the 5 years of its existence. Carmel Smith, Vice President of Golf Queensland presented the trophies and the perpetual trophy donated by Carmel and Lyndal Krupa.

Our Captain Debbie Macaulay was delighted that her mother Janet Minihan was able to come from Melbourne for the event.

We had 23 pairs entered with some coming from as far away as Perth , Cairns and Melbourne . It is wonderful to see the pleasure these Mothers and Daughter and Grandmothers and Granddaughters show at having a golfing day together.

This year we opened the event to In-laws as well (mothers-in-law & daughters-in-law) but maybe the message didn't get through as we didn't have any entries from that group. Keep it in mind for next year!

Thank you all for coming and making it a very successful day.

Lyndal Krupa (On behalf of our Captain Debbie Macaulay)

WBBDVLGA Life Veterans Championships were held at Kingaroy Golf Club on Monday 13th & Tuesday 14th September 2010. The course was in great condition from the recent rain with the green keeper still pumping water off the course. There was no run and the scores returned are indicative of this. 1st Division winner was Lyn Smith (177) from Mt. Coolum from Dorothy Retschlag (179) Caboolture. The 2nd Division was a little more exciting with a play-off between Pat Plowman from Beerwah and Jenny Smallcombe from Mt. Coolum who both finished with 190. Jenny was the eventual winner after a one hole sudden death play-off. Division 3 winner was Shirley McDougall (207) from Nanango with Judith Dorhauer (211) from Tewantin Noosa. The 36 hole nett winners are Jean Burey-Porter 144 from Kingaroy, Fay Wiggins 148 from Cooroy and Wendy Cameron 146 from Woodford. Unfortunately some of our winners had left before presentation and therefore missed out on the photos. Congratulations to all the winners and to Natalie and her committee for a very well run tournament. Farewell and congratulations to Val Bazley for a job well done. Val resigned as tournament director from this event and is looking forward to once again playing in future. ( download all results )

Wide Bay Closed Championships 2010 were held at Bribie Island and Pacific Harbour Golf Clubs in August. Congratulations to the green staff for the fabulous presentation of both courses and although it was very windy on Monday some great scores were returned. Thank you to the committees of both Clubs and the ladies who volunteered to assist with the field and the scoring etc. Tuesday was a much better day with only light winds and the scores were indicative of this. Tiffany-Claire Lewis (Gympie) is our District Champion for 2010 with Cheryl Loimantra (Bribie Island) - B Grade Champion and Barbara Best (Pacific Harbour) - C Grade Champion. Foursomes Champions are Lauren Mason (Horton Park) & Dorothy Retschlag (Caboolture). Congratulations are in order for these ladies as well as all the other winners that are listed in the results attached. Photos will be available in the next few days here as well. We hope that you all enjoyed your time at Bribie Island and will return next year for the Championship that will be held at Bundaberg/Bargara. ( results )

Wide Bay Junior Championships were held at Caloundra this year on Sunday 2nd May with a 10am tee off. This was an "Open" & "Closed" GQ State ranking event and is therefore open to all junior girls who were under 18 years of age. Katherine Hull ALPG supported this event. The winner of the Open was Alison Lee from Brisbane with a fine 75 while Lauren Mason won the Closed shooting 77. The best nett of the day went to Samantha Hill from Surfers Paradise.  ( download results )

Junior Jug is over for another year. The 7 districts competed this year at Mossman Golf Club in Far North Queensland. The event was hotly contested and Central Queensland won by 1.5 points from Gold Coast. Our players were Lauren Mason from Horton Park, Hollie Sinclair from Beerwah and Kate Law from Maryborough. Hollie and Kate had not represented before but approached every game with enthusiasm and represented their District well, as did Lauren. The standard of play this year was exceptional in every match and they did our District proud. The results are attached. ( download daily scores here ) ( download result score sheet here )

RESULTS OF WBBDWGA PRESIDENT’S CUP -HELD ON 1 DECEMBER 2009

AT CALOUNDRA GOLF CLUB

A field of 140 players contested the President’s Cup at Caloundra Golf Club in warm sunny conditions. The scores were excellent and reflected the quality of the players in the field. The complete results are shown in the following table. The players enjoyed their day, and responded favourably to the late date of the event. As one player said to me, “Everything important is finished now, and we are looking for something to end the season!”

Due to the warmer weather, it was decided to start the field earlier than advertised. All players were early for their tee times and for the most part, were able to hit off on time. Wally the Womble made his presence felt on the nearest-the-pin markers, keeping an eye on those doing the measuring!

Congratulations to the winners on the day and thank you to everyone who participated in the event.
