Lewis from Gympie Pines who was only 2 over for the first nine come home
strongly to win the Closed event with a very fine 80. The weather was a
little cool and breezy throughout and the course was in excellent condition.

 | Queensland Inter-District Match Play 2009 for the Meg Nunn Salver was
won conclusively by Brisbane & District. They proved too strong for the
Gold Coast winning the match 5/2 and passed us winning by 2 1/2 points. Our
team of Josie Ryan and Sue Jones (Headland), Stacey Burrows (Maryborough),
Laura McCahon (Caboolture), Donna Mulder (Tewantin Noosa) and Sue Pottle (Kingaroy)
were the only team to win 7/0 but in the end it was not quite enough. Thank
you ladies for playing so well and a special thank you to our caddies for
their dedication. ( download

 | Wide Bay District Championships 2008 were played at Kingaroy on Sunday,
Monday and Tuesday 24th, 25th & 26th August. There were 165 players in
the event in all grades. The course was in great condition and Kingaroy
should be congratulated on their hospitality and a very well run tournament
by Val Bazely. The entertainment on Monday night was exceptional and Lois
Watson (Life Member) elated us with her presence. |

Hetherington (Caboolture) 83 with Michelle Marsden & Joan Milton from

 | The Inter- District Match Play for the Meg Nunn Salver 2008 was held in
Cairns this year from the 8th to the 12th September. Our team of Gia Stolz
(Caloundra), Stacey Burrows (Maryborough), Josie Ryan (Headland), Kimberley
Chapman (Maryborough), Lisa Hetherington (Caboolture) and Donna Mulder
(Tewantin Noosa) played very well in the atrocious wet conditions. Because
of the wet weather and the very wet course the matches could have gone
either way and often did. The results were very close with Far North
Queensland winning by a very slim margin of 3 points with 3 wins, 1 square
and 2 losses. Central Queensland were very unlucky as they won the most
matches but by only winning 4 matches 3/2, squaring 1 match and losing 1
match, their margins were not enough. Downs South West also won 4 matches
and losing 2 came in third. Congratulations Far North Qld. ( download

 | SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE TEAM has represented the District with pride
once again in the 25th year of the Meg Nunn Salver and come in a creditable
second. Downs and South Western proved to be too strong in their own environment
taking out the Meg Nunn Salver convincingly with 32.5 points. They never
lost a match as most players in the team were Toowoomba Golf Club members.
Wide Bay are proud of the fact that they were the only team not to lose by
squaring their match with Downs in the tournament. It was a grand week of
golf with all Districts trying their best to take home the Salver. The
course was in magnificent condition considering the drought and the
hospitality could not be faulted. Our team of Gia Soltz (Caloundra),
Kimberley Chapman (Maryborough), Venessa Hansen (Kingaroy), Donna Mulder
(Tewantin Noosa), Jan Thomas (Bargara) and Tracey Hardie (Horton Park) were
a force to be reckoned with all week. Once again Central was our nemesis
being the only match we lost. Donna Mulder from Tewantin Noosa was
undefeated in her matches with all the other players performing well.
Congratulations Downs and South Western on your first win in this
competition. ( download

were hosted by Horton Park & Mt
Coolum. Nominations were down with only 89 A grade, 122 B grade and 39 C

Our Wide Bay Champion for the Miss V Redman Salver this year is Abby
Driver (Bribie Island) who posted great scores at both courses an 81 at Mt
Coolum and a fine 80 at Horton Park. This was closely followed by Kimberley
Crawley (Horton Park) with 82, 82 as runner-up on a count back from Fay
Payne (Caloundra). Kimberley started her round on the first hole at Horton
Park with a fantastic hole in one. Our Champion of Champions was won by Joan

 | WIDE BAY FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP 2007 - The foursomes had an
exciting finish with Gia Stolz and Fay Payne (Caloundra) and Kathy
Atkins (Headland) and Susie Elton (Caloundra) finishing their rounds with 82
gross. This forced a three hole play-off which was finally won by Gia and
Fay with Kathy and Susie as the runners-up. Second Division (combined
handicap 22.5) was won by Beryl Maker and Maureen Sloan (Horton Park)
93 from Helen Aynsley and Sherry Smith (Horton Park) 98. Congratulations
ladies. ( download

 | The Junior Jug 2007 is over for another year with the Wide Bay Team of
Natalie Hitzman, Laura McCahon and Lauren Mason playing very well. The
competition started on Monday with our team being the only 4 point winner in the first
session against the home team North Qld . The afternoon was a
square against Far North Qld that put us in front after the first days
competition. On Monday night the rain set in again and made the course very
soggy and the rain continued for the morning session making conditions for
all very uncomfortable. Tuesday was not a good day for our team losing both
matches to Central Qld and only squaring 1 match against the Gold Coast.
Wednesday we played Brisbane & District and had a great win scoring 3.5
points. We had a bye in the afternoon and took the girls into Townsville for
a little deserved R&R. On our last session on Thursday morning our
matches were squared against Downs & South West allowing Central Queensland to come in the eventual
winners. The competition was very close with only a few points between all
teams as all the players performed well above expectations. Congratulations CQ. ( download

 | The Wide Bay Championships this year were held at Bargara & Bundaberg.
Both courses were in excellent condition due to the heavy rain received in May.
The Bundaberg layout was new to a number of the players as they have redesigned
there course in the last couple of years. The ladies who participate in this
event are all fine competitors and enjoy a good time away on different
courses. |
There were a number of viable contenders for the Division 1 Foursomes that
were held at Bargara on Sunday 20th August but Kim Martin & Josie Ryan (80)
showed their form to win admirably from Gia Stolz & Marian Hemsley (86). The
nett winners were Barbara Saville & Joan Fincher from Caloundra with a fine
(72) with runners-up Jan Thomas & Maxine Cotter from Bargara (74).
Division 2 foursomes were also hotly contended at Bundaberg with Joy Cartner
& Kath Sharrock (94) from Isis taking out the title from Jeanette Baughurst
& Kath Thompson (95) from Bundaberg. The nett was capably won by Eileen
Czislowski & Barbara Thorburn (64) from Tin Can Bay from the incoming
President Jacki Petterson (Bundaberg) and her daughter Caryn Spence (Oakwood
Park) with a fine 71.5.
The AGM was held after the foursomes and it was great to see so many who
attended the meeting. We say goodbye to Abby Driver from the President's role
and welcome Jacki Petterson into the chair. Carmel Smith, President of WGQ,
addressed the meeting regarding unification and informed all that this will be
going ahead shortly. The new committee members are updated in the
"Committee" page for all to see.
On Monday the 21st the single titles were up for grabs.284 players competed
in all grades and the competition was extremely strong. Hayley Wilkinson from
Bargara won the Championship Miss V Redman Salver with fine scores of 72/79 and
Nikita Thomas 74/79 was runner-up. The 36 hole nett was won by Nikita's mother
Jan 140, runner-up Julie Wilson 146c/b runner-up.
A play-off decided the B Grade Championship between Dawn Lewis of Maryborough
and Shirley Warren from Bundaberg who both finished on 188. Dawn was the
eventual winner of the Mrs Lois Watson Salver. The nett winners were
Tiffany-Claire Lewis 138 from Gympie Pines and runner-up Dawn Clements 140 from
Bargara.
Bundaberg also featured in the C Grade Championship being won by Cora Nichols
207 while a new comer to the arena Marie Oxlade from Caboolture finished on 209.
Maureen Unwin from Bargara 146 won the nett and Lyn Hyde 149 from Cooroy was
runner-up.
Next year at the same time we are all looking forward to a great Championship
once again at Horton Park & Mt. Coolum on the Sunshine Coast.
JUNIOR JUG WINNING TEAM 2006 - DOWNS & SOUTH WEST
 |
The Junior
Jug was first played in Queensland in 1984. There are seven Districts in
Queensland who compete every year in the match play format. Wide Bay
Burnett, Gold Coast, Downs South West, Far North Queensland, North
Queensland, Brisbane & District and Central Queensland. The competition
is played over three and a half days and Maryborough hosted the event for
the Wide Bay Burnett District. Each team consists of three juniors with two
to play in each match.
Prominent
juniors who have since turned professional from our Wide Bay and have
proudly participated in this event are Sarah Jane Kenyon, Katherine Hull and
Trudi Jeffrey. Karrie Webb, Rachel Hetherington, Nicole Lowien, Alison Munt,
Karen Pearce and Sandra McMenamin who are all great ambassadors for the game
of golf started in this arena as well.
Strong
competition this year was very quickly displayed with the junior girls
running hot right from the start. Central Queensland who were the defending
Champions won their first match against Wide Bay with Ali Orchard from
Gympie going down to Jessica Jonassen (also a State Junior cricketer) and
Brooke O’Keefe keeping her undefeated record in tact by dismissing Lexie
Smith from Headland on the 18th hole. Gold Coast won against
Brisbane & District with a great match being played by Bianca Mathiou
against Christina Mew. Downs defeated Far North Queensland and the event was
well under way.
By
the end of day 1 Gold Coast and Central Queensland were neck and neck with
Downs half a point behind. The third match demonstrated some terrific golf
as the girls got used to the course and the pin positions. Central
Queensland was still leading with the Gold Coast and Brisbane & District
hot on their heels. Eileen Bell of North Queensland defeated Trudi Collins
from Central Queensland in the fourth match but the ever-strong Brooke
O’Keefe again won against Lauren Freeman. Downs cleaned up Wide Bay
Burnett in close matches with Katelyn Must sinking a 20 foot putt on the last
to square her match. B & D defeated Far North Qld with the talented
Christina Mew playing off 6 being equal par when she won 4/2 against
Tara-Lee McArthur.
The
5th & 6th rounds again were hard fought with CQ
winning against Far North Qld and are anxiously watching B&D and Downs
this afternoon while they have a well earned rest. Wide Bay led at the turn
and Katleyn Must continued strongly to win against Emma Claridge from North
Qld while Ali Orchard finished square. Gold Coast succumbed to the very
strong Downs team with Candice winning her fourth match in a row. Tegan
Linwood had her first win in the Junior Jug against the talented Corinne
Swan 4/3.
The
No. 1 players of Brisbane and the Wide Bay displayed some awesome golf when
they clashed in the 6th round. Christina Mew and Katelyn Must
both finished two over the card but Christina won by virtue of two
sensational birdies in the closing holes. Ali won her first match 1up
against a very capable Ellen Chambers from Pine Rivers. Downs and North Qld
drew in their match with Candice Armstrong from Downs recording her first
loss but team mate Zoe Field countered with a strong win against Lauren
Freeman. The Gold Coast failed against Far North Qld with the younger Sarah
Kirsch and Jessica Francis winning 3/2 and 5/3 respectively.
The stage
was set for an excellent finish with 3 teams vying for the final honours.
Downs on 15points, Central on 13˝ and Brisbane & District on 12 points.
Gold
Coast assisted Downs to a very well earned win by defeating Central
Queensland in both rubbers. Bianca Mathiou who was 2 under par after the
first 9 put Brooke O’Keefe under extra pressure to emulate her 5 wins in
2005. Bianca hung on to win 2/1 while Kelsey Stringer won 2 up against a
rising star in Jessica Jonassen. Eileen Bell from North Queensland was the
form player of the tournament winning 4 and squaring one of her 5 matches.
Emma Claridge assisted in the win against Far North Queensland. However
Downs players Tegan Linwood and Zoe Field came home strong against Brisbane
winning both rubbers. Grace Cummings and Ellen Chambers never had a chance
against the in form team.
Downs
& South West were the eventual winners and it is only the 6th
time since 1984 that they have done so. Candice Armstrong, Zoe Field and
Tegan Linwood with President Margaret Adcock and Team Captain Adele Roberts
were absolutely elated as they have found it difficult to field a team in
previous years. CONGRATULATIONS DOWNS & SOUTH WEST.
